Our last Scotland Blog....funny signs and sayings

Our trip was so much fun, John and I really enjoyed our time in Scotland.  One of our favorite things was the different signs or sayings, a few of our top ones are below: * Take away - take out * Trolly - grocery cart * Cheers  - Have a good day * Carriage - car * Rubbish -trash * Queue - line * Gritting - the process of spreading salt on icy roads * Dual carriageway - 4 lane highway * Chips - fries   Oversized bags Were not sure on this one but think it means a work plant...not an actual plant! Lines likely This was used when there was a shoulder on a road so you potentially have room to walk. Free towing if you break down Otters were real Love this one! Passing lane Clean up Poop...... For rent - to let.  It kept looking like toilet to me! I found it interesting my grapes were from Africa The plastic caps of bottles were attached.  I thought it was a poor design until I saw this. Scottish Food!

 We (Amity) were a little nervous about the food in Scotland since she is gluten and dairy free.   Surprisingly it was never an issue.  Salads were not always available, specially up north but you can always get a burger with out a bun or cheese.   I discovered I really like Haggis.  I had a haggis and venison meat pie early in our trip and for our last night I had a Haggis Scotch Egg.  It was awesome!   I’m going to find a recipe for sure.  Other notable eats was the fish and chips, mussels and steak and ale pie.

St Andrew’s New Course

 I didn’t get chosen to golf the old course so we made a plan that I would grab one of the first available tee times for the new course and Amity would do some shopping for gifts.  Other than a strong wind, the weather was perfect.  I was 3 over through 9!  At the turn the wind was in my face and it started raining.  I was prepared with rain gear but I got to experience the true St Andrew’s experience.  I ended up shooting an 85.  Much better than my 98 on the Jubilee course 2 days ago.  What a great day, I played with a father and son from South Africa.

Dinner

 If you’re ever in St Andrew’s and looking for a restaurant recommendation, we recommend Forgan’s.  The Forgan building used to be the leading golf club manufacturer in the late 1800’s   The Prince of Wales hired them to make his clubs.  Today it is a restaurant and specialize in larger parties   On Sundays they do a special “Sunday roast”   Amity had the beef roast and I had the lamb (I figured one less lamb here wouldn’t be missed. 😀)

The Old Course!

 The next best thing to playing golf on the very first golf course is being able to walk it with my beautiful bride!  On Sundays the old course closes to golf and becomes a park for the public to walk their dogs or to let the kids play.  The bunkers on all the courses here are crazy, we tried to capture in pictures and videos.

St Andrew’s Castle and Catherdral

We did a lot of walking today.  Luckily our apartment is perfectly located.  The cathedral was a religious destination and was built in the 1200’s.  It was destroyed by fire a few times and once by violence until the 1400’s where it has stayed similar to what we see today.  The Castle was built just before the cathedral and went through many renovations until 1689.  It was used as a prison at one point.
