Hello North Carolina
We got on the road by noon today, John had to finish up some work on our old house. We stopped at the Wright Brothers National Monument in Kill Devil Hills, NC to learn more about the Wright Brothers. We were able to see some cool stuff in DC at the Air and Space Museum so it was neat to be able to stop here so the kids could see where the first flight took place.
Our ranger was awesome, we've gotten some really great rangers that really share the history well. Today's ranger has lived in the outer banks his entire life and worked at the Wright Brothers Monument for 38 years. After seeing where the first flight(s) took place we walked up to the monument. There were tons of grasshoppers too, Mac thought that was pretty cool.
Both of the kids did the junior ranger program here and the ranger that graded their packets was a retired homeschool teacher. She noticed the kids were homeschool kids right away....she said she could always tell because the parents don't "help" the children figure out the answers they let them research on their own. As she graded Mac's paper he had gotten a math problem wrong and she asked him if he worked the problem on paper or in his head....Mac said in his head. John caught the end of her conversation with Emily. Emily had done everything in her age group and also started on the 9-12 age group and got all those correct too...including the math problem Mac got wrong! John said she asked her if she did it on paper or in her head and Emily said paper of course! She really praised Emily which was very cool.
We arrived at our campsite in Hatteras, it's windy and humid but beautiful here. We can't wait for a beautiful sunrise tomorrow!
